Federal Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students (PLUS)

Federal Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) are provided to families who may not qualify for other types of aid or who need additional funds. PLUS loans are made to parents of undergraduate students and obtained through banks and other commercial lenders. PLUS loans carry a variable interest rate limited to nine percent which begins to accrue 60 days after disbursement. The amount of each loan may not exceed the student’s cost of education minus other aid received.

Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loans

Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loans follow the same general guidelines as the Subsidized Stafford Loans described previously. There are two major differences:

  1. Students may qualify for an unsubsidized loan regardless of financial need.
  2. Interest accrues on the loan while they are in school.
