University Statement on COVID-19 (Coronavirus)

Oklahoma Panhandle State University officials are closely monitoring the outbreak of a new Coronavirus, COVID-19. This novel (new) virus causes respiratory illness that can spread from person to person. The US Centers for Disease Control currently believes the risks of COVID-19 to the American public remain low.

OPSU officials will continue to monitor guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and provide updates to the campus community as the situation develops further.

COVID-19 is present in the United States, but at this time, there are no confirmed cases in Oklahoma or bordering states.

Symptoms of COVID-19 infection may include fever, coughing, and shortness of breath.

Out of an abundance of caution, we recommend that all members of the OPSU community self-monitor any illness they may have and practice the following steps to help prevent the spread of disease:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, and throw the tissue in the trash
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds or more
  • Stay home when you are sick, except to seek medical care

If you are returning from international travel, please contact the OPSU Student Health Clinic at 580-349-1358, Monday through Thursday, from 10 AM-3 PM for a brief phone screening.
