OPSU Serves as a Hub for Future Agriculture Leaders

As the demand for skilled professionals in the agricultural industry grows, Oklahoma Panhandle State University is leading in experience and opportunity for students pursuing careers in agriculture. With a focus on hands-on learning and competitive team opportunities, OPSU equips students with the practical skills and career-ready experiences they need to thrive in a dynamic and evolving industry.

This past summer, 21 OPSU students took part in internships across various agricultural sectors, gaining valuable real-world experience while solidifying their expertise and expanding their professional networks. These internships spanned disciplines such as agribusiness, animal science, and meat science, providing students with a strong foundation as they prepare to enter the workforce. OPSU’s deep connections with local agricultural enterprises further enhance their academic preparation, ensuring that graduates are well-positioned for success.

At OPSU, learning extends far beyond the classroom. Students engage in hands-on opportunities that allow them to work directly with livestock, crops, and meat processing. This commitment to experiential learning ensures that graduates are academically prepared and capable of addressing the challenges of the modern agricultural landscape with confidence and competence.

“At Oklahoma Panhandle State University, we are committed to providing students with the tools and experiences they need to succeed in industry. Through hands-on learning and competitive team opportunities, our students gain the technical expertise and leadership skills necessary to thrive in today’s workforce,” stated Dr. Julie Dinger, University President. “I am incredibly proud of our student’s accomplishments, and their success at national competitions reflects the dedication of our faculty and the strength of our agricultural programs. We are proud to be cultivating the next generation of ag leaders.”

One of OPSU’s standout programs is its competitive teams, including the meat judging, show, and livestock judging teams. These programs allow students to develop technical expertise, teamwork, and leadership skills, all while representing the university at national competitions. These experiences are invaluable, allowing students to apply their knowledge in real-world settings while cultivating a sense of camaraderie and school pride.

Tracy Kincannon, Dean for the College of Agriculture, Science, and Nursing, stated, “Having an educational philosophy that incorporates every aspect of the industry is vitally important to us here at OPSU. Our classroom rigor gives our students the historical background and scientifically based knowledge of the Agricultural industry. That, coupled with hands-on labs and industry-driven competitive teams, gives OPSU graduates a head start in their respective careers and what makes them some of the most sought-after ag grads in the area.”

The 2023-2024 season was exceptional for the OPSU Meat Judging Team. Makenzie Webster was honored as the National Division High Point Individual Overall and National Champion at the Cargill High Plains Contest. The team also earned National Division High Team Overall Beef Grading in the same competition. Additionally, J.D. Fox distinguished himself by claiming the title of National Division High Point Individual Overall at the Southwestern in Fort Worth. These accolades reflect the students’ dedication and highlight OPSU’s commitment to excellence in agricultural education.

Students at OPSU benefit from personalized instruction, working closely with experienced faculty in small class sizes that foster individual growth. The university’s innovative programs provide a competitive edge, whether through internship placements, academic instruction, or participation in national team competitions.

With a strong track record of producing industry-ready graduates, OPSU is an ideal institution for students looking to build successful careers in agriculture. Through hands-on experiences, competitive team opportunities, and the mentorship of dedicated faculty, OPSU continues to stand out as a leader in agricultural education across the region.
