Job Summary

The Coordinator of Counseling, who reports to the Dean of Student Affairs, must demonstrate experience with mental health and behavioral intervention strategies. The Coordinator must have the skills to organize and administer a sustainable emotional and physical health awareness program. The Coordinator will serve as an advisor to the campus Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) to provide expertise and recommendations for intervention strategies to address psychological needs, behavioral signs, symptoms and risk factors involving potential suicide, sexual assault, substance abuse, actual or potential violence, or serious psychological disturbance. The Coordinator will provide some individual counseling services and provide referrals to off-campus professional services for students when appropriate.

Responsibilities

  • Offer programs and services to promote and enhance the emotional and physical well-being of students, staff and faculty.
  • Consult with the Dean of the Students and the Behavioral Management Team to manage serious cases involving campus safety, as well as the safety of the individual.
  • Provide leadership and direction for the day-to-day operations of the Counseling Office.
  • Being knowledgeable and decisive for management of relevant policies and procedures related to counseling and cultural competence.
  • Ensure availability and effectiveness of 24-hour crisis intervention including potential walk-in and on-call services.
  • Ensure fiscal responsibility of departmental budget and allocated resources.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with other divisions and departments, especially with other staff and students in the Academic Resource Center.
  • Create and implement innovative awareness programs.
  • Consult with University administrators, faculty, and staff on matters related to mental health issues, emotional challenges, and psychosocial problems affecting all students.
  • Provide individual and group counseling as appropriate to meet the needs of our students.
  • Work closely with campus police to assess recurring behavioral issues.
  • Meet regularly with the Dean of the Students to discuss the status of student issues.
  • Advance the mission and goals of Oklahoma Panhandle State University through strategic planning, innovative thinking and assessment.
  • Comply with confidentiality requirements as set by FERPA, HIPAA, federal, state, local requirements and professional licensing standards.
  • Participate in training and monitoring Academic Resource Center Student Mentors.
  • Teamwork is essential. This position is housed in the Academic Resource Center and works closely with the professional and student staff in that space.
  • Monitors all aspects of the department's daily operations, including supervision of student workers, budget management, crisis support, and preparation of reports.
  • Occasional weekend and evening time commitments may be required.
  • Must have a strong work ethic and lead by example.
  • Must be a professional, credible and respected representative of the institution internally and in the community.
  • Demonstrated willingness and ability to act ethically and socially responsible.
  • Must be able to lift more than 20-lb. objects; frequent bending, stooping, and walking.
  • Can be exposed to a variety of weather conditions for periods of time.
  • Ability to communicate in a courteous manner.
  • Other duties as assigned by Dean of Student Affairs or designee.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in counseling, school counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, or social work, and have or be able to attain the appropriate licensure.
