Aggie Athletics has 98 on SAC Commissioner’s Honor Roll for 2018-19

Oklahoma City, Okla. – Oklahoma Panhandle State University Athletics placed a total of 98 individuals on the 2018-19 Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) Commissioner’s Honor Roll, it was announced by the league office. The academic accolades – earned by 35 percent of OPSU’s student-athletes in qualifying sports – are presented to members of SAC institutions who carried a 2018-19 grade point average of 3.00 or above and compete in a sport recognized by the NAIA.

In amassing its highest total of SAC Commissioner’s Honor Roll awards of its brief time in the league, the Aggie honorees were selected from the following 11 programs: football, volleyball, men’s & women’s cross country, men’s & women’s basketball, men’s & women’s golf, competitive cheerleading, baseball and softball. Seven of those sports – men’s golf (80%), men’s cross country (67%), women’s cross country (63%), softball (59%), women’s golf (57%), women’s basketball (56%) and volleyball (53%) – all had better than half of their rosters gain Commissioner’s Honor Roll recognition.

“I appreciate how hard our student-athletes – as well as coaches – work to make sure that classroom success is always paramount in what we do as a department,” OPSU Director of Athletics Meghan Mulcahy said. “This is a part of the culture we want for Aggie Athletics; academic achievement is our main destination, when all is said-and-done. And while I am proud of our numbers for 2018-19, I hope this challenges us to work even harder and to shoot for more academic recognition like this for our programs in the future.”

In terms of pure numbers, Head Coach Jason LaRocque’s baseball team led the way for Panhandle State teams with 24 awards, followed by 18 from football. Mulcahy – who doubles as the Aggies’ softball head coach – had 13 award winners and volleyball head coach Shelby Bartley’s squad had 10. Head Coach Victor Esparza’s women’s basketball roster yielded nine awards, men’s basketball had six, and Denise Levine’s cross country teams had a combined nine (four men and five women) honored. Golf Head Coach Dewayne Mauldin’s men’s and women’s teams both garnered four academic nods from the SAC, with competitive cheerleading also gaining four awards.

Three Aggies earned the SAC accolades in two different sports. Vanessa Gonzalez and Naomi Rodriguez competed in both women’s cross country and women’s basketball. Kori Bailey played volleyball and was on the competitive cheerleading team.

The Sooner Athletic Conference recognized academic achievements throughout the conference as a record 1,049 student-athletes from its members made the 2018-19 Commissioner’s Honor Roll. The 2018-19 SAC Commissioner’s Honor Roll included the most recipients in the five-year history of the award.
