Oklahoma City, Okla. – A total of four Oklahoma Panhandle State University golfers – three men and one woman – have been honored on the 2018-19 Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) Academic All-Conference Team for their respective sports, it was announced by the league office. For the Aggie men, it was sophomore Chandler Evans (Guymon, Okla.), senior Lucas Heathington (Paradise, Texas) and senior Sergi Teller (Barcelona, Spain) earning the SAC accolades, with junior Rylee Higgins (Texhoma, Okla.) representing the OPSU women’s golf team.
To earn the SAC Academic All-Conference designation, student-athletes must be a sophomore, junior or senior in a SAC-sponsored sport, while posting a grade point average of 3.25 or better in 2018-19.
“I am so very proud of our golfers,” OPSU Head Golf Coach Dewayne Mauldin said. “As a coach, I put a premium on preparing our student-athletes for the future, which includes academic success. These four Aggies have shown they’re willing to push themselves hard in the academic arena.”
“And the classroom is a place I’m glad to see our golfers perform well-above par,” Mauldin added.
Heathington, who graduated from OPSU in May 2019, was an Industrial Technology major. This is his third academic all-conference award, after being recognized on the SAC honor roll last year and in the Heartland Conference (when the Aggies were members of NCAA II) as a sophomore.
Evans is majoring in Agronomy and Teller, a Business Administration major, both earned their first academic all-conference awards. Teller, a May 2019 graduate, was a transfer to Panhandle State in 2017-18.
OPSU women’s golfer Higgins, an Elementary Education major at OPSU, was also a three-time academic all-conference honoree, as well. She was tabbed by the SAC in 2017-18 and on the Heartland Conference’s academic awards list in 2016-17.
