Commencement Set for May 9th

Goodwell, Okla. — Oklahoma Panhandle State University Commencement ceremonies are Thursday, May 9 at 6:30 p.m. at Anchor D Arena in Oscar Williams Field House. This is the 109th commencement ceremony.

Kim Peterson is the commencement speaker. He is a proud, fourth-generation, and lifelong resident of the Oklahoma Panhandle. Three sets of his great-grandparents homesteaded in Texas County. After graduating from Guymon High School in 1970, Kim followed in his parents’ footsteps and attended Oklahoma Panhandle State University.

When he received his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Arts Education in 1974, he enrolled in postgraduate classes at Oklahoma State University. The City of Guymon has appreciated Peterson’s involvement for many years, for he has served as a board member for Guymon Kid’s Inc., Guymon United Way, Guymon Chamber of Commerce, City of Guymon Rodeo, and City of Guymon Convention and Tourism. He currently serves on the Oklahoma Municipal League Board of Directors; the Mayor’s Council of Oklahoma Board of Directors, including two terms as president; the Oklahoma Economic Development Authority Board of Directors, and the Guymon Industrial Foundation Board of Directors. Elected to the City Council of Guymon as councilman for Ward 4 in 2011, the council elected him vice mayor in 2011 and mayor in 2013.

A strong supporter of Panhandle State, he became a board member of the Panhandle State Foundation Board of Directors in 2007 and served the board as president from 2014 to 2016. In addition, Mr. Peterson supports Panhandle State rodeo, athletic teams, and student organizations. Kim Peterson feels passionately about his community: “Guymon is a great place to grow up, a great place to raise a family, and my job is keeping it a great place for everyone.”
