Panhandle Wins Three Event Titles in Weatherford

Weatherford, Okla. — The Oklahoma Panhandle State University men and women’s Rodeo team took home the second place wins at this past weekend’s college rodeo in Weatherford, Okla.

Panhandle State brought back three girls in the short round of the breakaway roping. Taylor Jacobson had a time of 2.8 seconds in the long round placing her sixth in the round. Jacobson then had a time of 4.2 seconds in the short round placing her third in the round and third in the average. Bailey Brown and Beau Peterson had times of 2.6 and 2.7 seconds in the long round, but unfortunately turned in no times in the short round.

Beau Peterson also made the short round in the goat tying and won the average in this event. Peterson won the long round by 4 tenths of a second. Peterson then won third in the short round making her the weekend’s winner. Kaylee Smith also made it back in the short round. Smith won second in the short round and tied for third in the average.

The red and blue vests dominated the saddle bronc riding this weekend taking home the first through third places in the average. Cody Ballard won third in the long round with a score of 70 points. Ballard then split the win in the short round with teammate, Cooper Thatcher, giving Ballard the average win and Thatcher the reserve title. Rowdy Chesser also had a successful weekend with scores of 67 and 65 points giving him the third spot in the average. Dawson Dahm won second in the long round with a score of 71 points, but unfortunately did not get a score in the short round.

Jade Taton scored 70 points in the second round of the bareback riding and won sixth in the average on one score.

Two Panhandle State teams made it back in the team roping. Newly formed team Jade Taton and Zane Grigsby turned in a time of 8.4 seconds in the long round and 8.7 seconds in the short round placing them fourth in the average. Logan Becker and her brother Chase Becker, from North Central Technical College, had a time of 8.5 seconds in the long round, but unfortunately got a no time in the short round.

Sam Goings made the short round in the steer wrestling with a time of 5.6 seconds, but unfortunately did not get a time in the short round.

Dustin Martinez stole the show in the bull riding. Martinez won the long round with the highest marked ride of the weekend, 84 points, and only three riders making the whistle in the long round. Martinez won second in the short round with a score of 74 points making him the average winner.

With only two more rodeos left this year, the teams are feeling the pressure of the upcoming College National Finals Rodeo. They will give it their all in hopes of qualifying for this prestigious event. The next rodeo will be in Hays, Kansas and will be the last one before the home hosted rodeo in Guymon. The teams are ready to win big at these next two rodeos and keep the winning tradition alive!
