Villerreal Earns SAC Special Teams Player of the Week Award

Oklahoma City—Emetrious Scott of Lyon snared Sooner Athletic Conference football offensive player of the week with his record-setting play this week.

Tori Williams from Southwestern Assemblies of God took SAC defensive player of the week, while Eduardo Villarreal of Oklahoma Panhandle State became the league special teams player of the week for Sept. 10-16.

Scott, a junior wide receiver from Antreville, S.C., sparked Lyon offensively with a program-record 251 yards receiving in a 26-23 overtime loss to Arizona Christian, ranked 22nd in the NAIA, on Saturday at Pioneer Stadium in Batesville, Ark. Scott produced the highest single-game receiving yardage total in the NAIA this season on his 12 catches. His 95-yard scoring reception marked the longest play from scrimmage in modern history for the Scots and put Lyon ahead 23-16 with 3:40 left in the fourth quarter. Lyon quarterback Spencer Childress also set a team record with his 337 yards passing.

On the season, Scott ranks seventh among the NAIA in receiving yards (391) and receiving yards per game (130.3).

Williams, a sophomore linebacker from Ennis, Texas, made two returns for touchdowns in Southwestern Assemblies of God’s first league win of the season 54-23 over Wayland Baptist on Saturday in Plainview, Texas. Williams collected a fumble and turned the recovery into a 40-yard touchdown return to cut the Lions’ deficit to 17-14 early in the second quarter. Williams snagged an interception and took the pickoff 38 yards for a score to put SAGU up 54-17 late in the fourth. Williams finished with 12 tackles, eight solo stops and 1½ tackles for a loss.

In 2018, Williams leads the Lions in tackles (21) and solo tackles (14).

Villarreal, a freshman punter-kicker from Lubbock, Texas, booted in the winning 20-yard field goal as time expired to bring Panhandle State a 38-35 victory over OUAZ on Saturday at Spirit Field in Surprise, Ariz. Villarreal converted five point-after kicks and averaged 30.2 yards on five punts. His longest punt went for 36 yards. The Aggies notched their first win of the year.

Within the NAIA, Villarreal tops the country with his perfect field-goal and extra-point conversion rates.

This year marks the inaugural football season for the SAC, whose member schools have captured an NAIA-best 106 national championships in 14 sports throughout its 40-year history. See the full schedule and results from the 2018 season here.
