Goodwell, Okla.—The Sooner Athletic Conference granted its highest number of Scholar Team awards ever with 67 teams across the league collecting the accolade in the 2017-18 seasons.
This academic honor is presented to teams that have accrued a 3.0 combined grade-point average in conference-sponsored sports. Of the total teams across the league, Oklahoma Panhandle State has six honored teams gracing the list. Of the six qualifying women’s basketball teams, OPSU ranked fifth, of the six each of men’s cross country and women’s cross country teams OPSU came in second and third respectively, the Aggies held the last spot of the four women’s golf teams, softball ranked fourth of seven teams, and volleyball secured the seventh spot of nine teams.
The SAC Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll was also released at the end of June which honors student-athletes who have been a member of a SAC-sponsored sport team and have maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or higher throughout the academic year.
The Commissioner’s Honor Roll is by Cypress Risk Management, an insurance agency based in Omaha, Neb. that specializes in providing customized solutions for collegiate student health and athletic accident insurance. The organization currently insures over 500,000 students nationwide and is already engaged with several other NAIA conferences in similar type of partnerships.
Of the twelve schools with representing athletes, Panhandle State has the third-most qualifying student athletes with a total of 98 across nine sports. Aggie Baseball and Lady Aggies Softball boasts 23 and 20 student athletes respectively, men’s and women’s cross country exhibited a combined 11, men’s basketball placed 8 and the Lady Aggies Basketball team showed 13. Men’s and women’s golf featured a combined 7 student athletes, and Lady Aggies Volleyball rounded out the list with 14.
Athletic Director Meghan Mulcahy expresses great pride in all facets of Aggie Athletics, saying, “I am proud of our student athletes for achieving outstanding goals not only in their sports but more importantly in the classroom. All of our coaches instill in their athletes the prominence of succeeding as students first, and encourage them to perform to their fullest capacity every day on the field and off. These accomplishments are reflections of their eagerness to thrive and of the passion of Panhandle State to help them to do so.”
