Panhandle State Homecoming September 22nd

Goodwell, Okla.—The OPSU Aggies Football team will be hosting conference rival Wayland Baptist University in this year’s Homecoming matchup. The game will be on Saturday, September 22 at Anchor D Stadium at 2:00pm. The day will also include the traditional homecoming parade and tailgate.

Homecoming was previously scheduled for October 6th versus Bacone College. However, Bacone initially suspended its operations in early May. The college followed up by granting a written release and full permission to contract for all of its student-athletes. In addition, the Sooner Athletic Conference dropped its intra-conference transfer policy in order to help these student-athletes find a new home to complete their eligibility. Upon their return to operations in June, Bacone announced that it would dissolve several of its athletic programs, including Football.

Panhandle State President Dr. Tim Faltyn shared his thoughts on the situation, “Seeing a fellow institution forced to cut programs is unsettling, we offer our whole-hearted support to Bacone College and all of their students, faculty and staff during these trying times. This event has strengthened our resolve to continue working toward our own goal of greater sustainability.”

Faltyn continued, “The decision to move homecoming was not easy, but there was really no better option. I’d like to commend our AD, our football coaches, our alumni association and all those responsible for the dozens of homecoming activities on campus for putting an excellent schedule of events together for that weekend. We have so many exciting things happening on campus, we can’t wait to show our homecoming crowd all the reasons they have to be proud of our university.”

OPSU Athletic Director Meghan Mulcahy said, “Wayland Baptist will be a great opponent for us on Homecoming. Wayland’s close proximity will make this an exciting game for the team and for fans to see. I wish Bacone the best of luck in the future.”

Head Coach Russell Gaskamp has this to say about the schedule change, “I’m really excited about playing WBU on Homecoming. They are the closest regional rival in the SAC. Last year we had a very competitive game against them and I expect the same this year. We will need all the fans’ support after being on the road for two weeks prior.”

The Aggies will replace the Bacone home game with a trip to Louisiana to take on NCAA DI Grambling State University.
