Goodwell, Okla. — A special musical performance is set for Tuesday, April 24, 2018, at 7 p.m. in Hughes Strong Hall in Centennial Theatre on the Oklahoma Panhandle State University campus. The event is free and open to the public.
The evening will start with a “Pre-Concert” Performance by the Guymon High School choir presenting concert music from their festival season. The Guymon Choir will be followed by the Panhandle State Band and Panhandle Chorale.
The Oklahoma Panhandle State University Panhandle Chorale directed by Panhandle State’s Vocal Music Director Dr. Dee Wilkins will be joined by students from Guymon, Goodwell, and Turpin High School choirs in their presentation of Joseph Haydn’s Missa Brevis in F Major. One of Haydn’s first works for chorus, it is a succinct presentation of the catholic mass, revealing moments of greatness that foreshadow the creative powers that were yet to be unfolded by this compositional master. Soloists for the work include high school students from the schools mentioned above, and Panhandle State Freshman Vocalist Chloe Bley.
The Panhandle State Concert Choir and Vocal Ensemble will also share music they will be performing on their spring recruiting tour April 30 and May 1. It features soloists Panhandle State students Claire Rice, Andie Wray, Kaylee Smith, and Jacob Long.
Tuesday will also be the 2nd Annual “Aggie Honors” concert, featuring talent from High School Seniors who have auditioned for scholarships and participation in Panhandle State ensembles. Tuesday’s honored Aggies include Kristen Perks from Alva, Okla.; Yanice Morales from Guymon, Okla.; and Jerilynn Wilkins from Goodwell, Okla. Wilkins and Morales are featured as duetting soloists in the Haydn Missa Brevis, and Kristen Perks performs a vocal solo in-between other musical sets.
Panhandle State’s Music Department Chair and Band Director Charla Lewis will direct the band in a performance themed around the quote, “If you talk to any director, they’ll say music is fifty percent of the movie” by Hans Zimmer. The group will perform “Chillers and Thrillers: Themes of Suspense by John Williams,” “Twister: Main Theme,” “John Williams: Symphonic Soundtracks,” and “Movie Blockbusters.”
