Lubbock, Texas—A successful showing from all members of the Panhandle State Equestrian team placed the program fourth overall at the Zone 7 Region 2 IHSA Western Show at Texas Tech this past weekend.
Saturday’s events saw six Aggie riders place in the top five of their divisions, with senior Jesslin Lamont claiming a first place finish in the Open Reining category; Lamont also scored a fifth place ranking in the Open Horsemanship division in the first show. Showing in the Novice group, junior Hannah Hammack marked a third place finish, with Kristin Allen and Reilly Shore taking fourth and fifth in the Intermediate group respectively. Beginner Walk/Trot contenders Tyler Meyeres and Sarah Atha each earned fifth place showings on day one.
The Aggies got off to a great start on Sunday as well, with Mackenzie Leach claiming the top spot and placing first in the Beginner Walk/Trot division. Allen closed out her weekend with a second place showing in the Intermediate group on day two, followed by Shore who scored fifth in the division. Rider Cassie Alcorn also showed well in the Walk/Trot category, taking third place in front of Meyeres and Atha who turned in fifth and sixth place rounds on Sunday in the Beginners group. Hammack matched her Saturday showing with another third place finish on Sunday, and Shore walked away with the fifth spot in her division on day two. Lamont took third in Open Reining at Sunday’s show.
Head Equestrian Coach Lisa Drumhiller was very pleased with the team’s performance and support for one another throughout the weekend, “These ladies have worked very hard to prepare for this show, and their placings reflect that. I am so proud of each and every one of them. Their success spurs my excitement to work with such talented women and I look forward to seeing what the future holds for this program.”
The Aggie equestrians will have a few weeks to prepare for their next show on Feb. 23 at Southern Nazarene in Bethany, Okla., where they will finish out the regular season and see who will advance to regionals. The Regional Championship also takes place that weekend in Bethany.
