Hispanic Student Center (El Centro)

Mission Statement

The Hispanic Student Center will serve as a community hub on campus for Hispanic students to gather, network, develop their leadership skills, and access services that support their academic success at Oklahoma Panhandle State University. We will serve as an additional reason that Hispanic students choose OPSU for furthering their academics. Students will experience the feeling of family and community on their first day as an Aggie. The relationships built here will be long lasting and contribute to an overall healthy quality of life for each student. Our Center will provide additional access to financial literacy, academic advising, cultural, and social services and programs. We will provide leadership and culturally relevant workshops regularly that will help develop needed skills for students entering the workforce.

Services Offered

(all services offered will be in partnership with university offices, academic advisors, department chairs, and Deans)

  • Specialized academic advising: we will deep dive with each student to assess their academic progress and identify any areas of concern. HSC advisors will partner with assigned academic advisors for follow up to ensure that concerns are addressed with the student. Additional partnership with the university’s Academic Resource Center will provide enhanced resources for the students’ academic success.
  • Specialized financial literacy and resources: in partnership with appropriate university personnel, financial literacy workshops can be provided to students and their parents in English and Spanish. Additional scholarship resources specific to Hispanic students will also be made available. The HSC will also take special partnership with the International Students Office to assist with employment resources.
  • Tutoring and study space: The HSC will employ several specialized tutors in the academic areas of science, math, and technology. These tutors can be requested and reserved through an online reservation system available through our social media accounts or website. The HSC will include multiple private study areas that are also available to request and reserve through our online reservation system.
  • Leadership and professional development: the HSC will provide leadership and professional development workshops that include resume building, interview skill building, and partnership with department chairs/Deans for relevant employment skill building
  • Cultural support and events: The HSC will provide culturally relevant events regularly to provide a sense of familiarity, create a network community, and encourage the collective and induvial identities of students
