Continuing with Hispanic Heritage Month, HALO hosted their second annual soccer tournament. The tournament took place at Anchor D Stadium, September 29th, from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. There was a total of eight teams participating from three different states (Oklahoma, Texas, & Kansas) in the tournament. The Dodge City Torros, from Dodge City, Kansas, took home the winning trophy. Director of Hispanic Student Services and Upward Bound, Teri Mora stated, “HALO and the Hispanic Alumni were able to work together to raise over $1,000 to go towards scholarships.”

Last year’s soccer tournament marked the first time Anchor D Stadium was used for soccer. The motivation for the tournament was to bring families together and create an event where anyone and everyone was welcome to watch people who love soccer compete. The annual soccer tournament has also served as an opportunity for Oklahoma Panhandle State University to showcase itself as the only HSI (Hispanic Serving Institution) in the state of Oklahoma. OPSU Vice President of Outreach, Dr. Ryan Blanton, said “We are very pleased with the number of teams that came out from the three different states. We look forward to next year and the continued partnership with HALO and the Alumni group that put this together.”
